What To Wear

This is your day, your photo shoot, so wear whatever you like! The best outfits are those who will make you smile when you see them on the photos, that are comfortable, and that make you feel good.

Having said that, the more thought you put into your choice of clothes, the more impact you will have on your final images. Coordinating but not matching, finding timeless outfits, adding layers and textures, paying attention to your shoes, being intentional with colors (especially if you plan to display your photos as pieces of art on your walls) will all greatly contribute to producing the kind of photos you would like.

For instance, if you are thinking of having a photography session outdoors in a tall field of grass, with the sun streaming behind you, long flowing dresses or classic romantic clothes for your kids might be the way to go. Your daughter might wear her hair long and loose, with a sweet linen dress with a couple of pearl necklaces on, while your son might be in a linen button up shirt, with his sleeves folded up, and a cute beret. On the other hand, if you are thinking of an urban environment, modern clothes with bright colors might be another possibility.

I would discourage any clothing with bold logos, big Mickey faces, large stripes, or words on them as they may take the focus away from your children and you. (However, if the t-shirt with Mickey is his favorite t-shirt and he wears it all the time/sleeps with it, take it with you!). After all the session is all about capturing the essence of your children, and who they are right now. For family photographs, I would also steer you away from dressing the whole family the same, as it just doesn’t look natural. Mixing and matching, with complementary colors are a great way to go. Funky accessories, favorite tutus or superhero outfits should be brought along. I am happy to make time for a change of clothes. Also, if there is anything you would like to have photographed with your child (a favorite bear or book, for instance), please bring it as well. The goal is to produce photos that melt your heart and bring a smile on your face and those personal touches are all part of it!
